The Vraem region has ecological zones ranging in height from 400m to 3000m, resulting in extensive geographical diversity of the flora and fauna. Unfortunately, Vrae, is also known for conflict and illegal activities, such as the growing of coca. In 2017, the local farmers united to pursue a legal income alternative through cacao production. This initiative has given rise to the Qori Warmi cooperative. “Qori Warmi” means “women are worth gold” in Quechua. A single variety of cacao was selected from promising native genetic stock by a family and is now slowly being adopted by others in the cooperative.Domantas Uzpalis, chocolatier.
