What is Minoxidil?
Minoxidil was the first drug approved for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (hair loss). Before that, minoxidil had been used as a vasodilator drug prescribed as an oral tablet to treat high blood pressure, with side effects that included hair growth and reversal of male baldness.
Researchers conducted an observational study in 393 men with androgenetic alopecia for the duration of 48 weeks. The study evaluated the effectiveness of minoxidil 5% topical solution compared to 2% minoxidil in stopping hair loss and stimulating new hair growth.
At the end of the observational study, the researchers reported that 5% topical minoxidil increased hair growth in men 45% more than the patients that used 2% minoxidil, concluding that minoxidil is a very effective hair growth treatment.[1]
